Park City's Deer Valley ski area will undergo a massive expansion in the coming years, adding 3,700 acres of skiable terrain as well as a village with 800 hotel rooms, 1,700 residential units and 250,000 square feet of commercial space.

The announcement, made by Deer Valley owner Alterra Mountain Company on Thursday, signals that Alterra has reached an agreement to acquire the Mayflower ski area and resort village that is under construction on properties bordering Deer Valley, according to the Salt Lake City Tribune

Mayflower developer Extell Development Company will partner with Alterra and be responsible for the lodging, residential and retail portions of the project.

The new Deer Valley terrain will have 16 chairlifts and a 10-passenger gondola, with a significant portion of the new lifts and trails expected to open as early as the 2025-26 ski season, Alterra said.

Upon completion, Deer Valley will have more than 5,700 acres of skiable terrain, making it the fourth-largest ski area in the United States.

The Deer Valley expansion area and village will be accessed via a new eastern entrance along Utah Highway 40, which will complement the resort's current Park City entrance.

The 800 new hotel rooms are to be laid out across multiple properties, though Alterra didn't reveal specifics.

Correction: Extell will head lodging, residential and retail portions of the Deer Valley expansion. A previous version of this report mistakenly said Alterra would.
